Salt Fish and Scrunchions by Necie

Anna and I have had a lot of fun with Salt Fish and Scrunchions (also known as Jack Likes Salt Fish and Scrunchions) written and illustrated by Necie.  We got this one from our library through inter-library loan and we enjoyed it so much I may just have to go purchase our own copy.

In fun rhyming text the book talks about the foods, some with peculiar names such as toutons and scrunchions, that are common in many homes in Newfoundland and Labrador.  The text takes up one side of each double page spread while colourful illustrations take up the other.  At the back of the book are recipes for some of the foods mentioned and also a glossary explaining some of the terms in the book.

Anna and I can testify to the fact that Molasses Buns made with the recipe in the book are delicious!  We put the library book into a clear plastic bag to protect it and set to work making the buns right after reading the book.  You can read more about our fun with the book on the Salt Fish and Scrunchions post on my personal blog.

On Necie's website you can check out sample pages from Salt Fish and Scrunchions and you can also get most of the recipes, including the Molasses Buns, that are in the book.  It's on her web site that I discovered she has written another book and I'm looking forward to reading that one too.

I think Salt Fish and Scrunchions is a book that should be in every home that has a connection to Newfoundland.  It would also make a great addition to a unit study on Newfoundland and Labrador.
